Technical films for industrial die-cutting: Kapton®, PTFE, Nomex®, Tyvek®

ATE die-cuts technical films Kapton®, PTFE, Nomex® and Tyvek® into parts machined to your dimensions, with or without adhesive. Delivered in rolls, sheets or individual parts, from our production sites in France and Germany. Family selection depends on the application’s actual constraint: temperature range, electrical insulation requirement, chemical resistance, or a simple need for barrier and protection.

Which film for which constraint?

These four films don’t answer the same constraint, despite sharing a thin gauge and the possibility of being die-cut to order.

Kapton®

A polyimide film. It covers the widest temperature range of the four, from -269°C to +400°C, with a dielectric strength that varies mainly with the film’s thickness: around 7,700 V/mil at 25 µm, against 3,900 V/mil at 125 µm. It’s the default choice when the constraint is an extreme temperature combined with a high electrical insulation requirement.

PTFE

A fluoropolymer film. Its distinctive property isn’t its temperature performance but its near-total chemical resistance and low coefficient of friction: it’s the choice when the part is exposed to aggressive chemicals rather than a pure electrical constraint.

Nomex® 410

An aramid paper. Its recognized UL insulation class is 220°C, and it retains a dielectric strength of 300 V/mil for several hours even at 400°C. It is rated UL94 V-0 (limiting oxygen index of 27 to 32% at room temperature). It’s the choice when electrical insulation needs to come with a flame-resistance requirement.

Tyvek®

A spunbonded high-density polyethylene nonwoven. Its service range is markedly narrower than the other three: it melts at 135°C and starts to shrink from 85°C, but stays flexible down to -73°C. It isn’t an electrical insulator: its key property is barrier performance — it blocks liquid water while letting water vapour through. It’s the choice for protection or technical packaging, not for a thermal or electrical constraint.

Why a film die-cut to order rather than raw roll stock ?

A technical film supplied on a roll only becomes an assembly part once it’s cut to the exact geometry of its location: shape, dimensional tolerance, positioning of holes or adhesive zones. Die-cut to order, it integrates directly into the customer’s production line, including for automated or robotic placement, rather than requiring an extra cutting step on the customer’s side.

Delivery formats

  • Parts cut to shape: ready to fit, with or without adhesive.
  • Single- or double-sided adhesive lamination: the film is supplied with adhesive already applied.
  • Rolls, sheets or individual parts: depending on your volume and supply model.
  • Pull tabs: optional, to ease handling of thin parts in production.

FAQ

What's the difference between Kapton and Nomex for electrical insulation?

Kapton® covers a much wider temperature range (-269°C to +400°C), with a dielectric strength ranging from 3,900 to 7,700 V/mil depending on the film’s thickness. Nomex® 410 has a more modest UL insulation class (220°C) and a UL94 V-0 flame rating. The choice depends on whether a flame-resistance requirement applies.

Which film should I choose for a flame-resistance requirement?

Nomex® 410 is rated UL94 V-0, with a documented limiting oxygen index (27 to 32% at room temperature). The UL94 status of Kapton®, PTFE and Tyvek® is not documented here.
