A part die-cut from a technical material (film, foam, adhesive, paper) passes through two different trades: the one that makes the material, and the one that cuts it to the shape and dimensions required. Buying the raw material from the manufacturer and cutting it in-house, or handing the whole job to a converter, are not two ways of doing the same thing. They are two different things being sold, each with its own limits.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Two trades, two different things being sold<\/h2>\n

A material manufacturer sells performance: a temperature range, a chemical resistance, a dielectric strength, an adhesion value, measured under precise conditions and guaranteed batch to batch. Their material ships as a roll or a sheet, in standard dimensions, for a use that is not yet defined at the point of sale. A converter sells something else: a part cut to the exact geometry of its location, to a defined dimensional tolerance, ready to be built into a production or assembly line. The two are connected, a converter’s part always starts from a manufacturer’s material, but one does not replace the other.<\/p>\n

What a material manufacturer sells, and what it doesn’t<\/h2>\n

A manufacturer sells material that meets its datasheet. It doesn’t sell a specific geometry: its rolls and sheets are sized for its customer base as a whole, not for the exact location of a part at a given customer. Cutting that material to the required shape, to the required tolerance, and repeatably from one run to the next, isn’t part of what a material manufacturer sells.<\/p>\n

What a converter adds to raw material<\/h2>\n

A converter starts from the same material but adds what the manufacturer doesn’t supply: cutting to the exact geometry of the application, a controlled dimensional tolerance, an adhesive or a laminated backing where needed, and the ability to reproduce the part in qualified series production. This step also carries an advisory role on the choice of material itself: a converter that cuts several families of technical materials can point a customer toward the material suited to their constraint, before the cutting step even begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

When buying direct is enough<\/h2>\n

Buying direct from the manufacturer, followed by in-house cutting, still makes sense when the part stays simple: a basic geometry, a wide tolerance, a volume that doesn’t justify dedicated cutting tooling. It’s also the right route when the company already has the equipment and the cutting expertise in-house for that type of material.<\/p>\n

When to bring in a converter<\/h2>\n

Bringing in a converter becomes worthwhile once the geometry gets more complex, the tolerance tightens, the volume justifies dedicated tooling, or the part needs to be qualified for series production under a specific quality framework. It’s also the right route when the choice of material itself isn’t settled yet, for the same advisory reason mentioned above.<\/p>\n

The ATE method<\/h2>\n

ATE cuts technical films, foams, adhesives and specialty papers to the geometry and tolerance agreed with the customer, from material supplied by the chosen manufacturer. Our production sites are located in France and Germany. The Uberach site (France) is certified to IATF 16949:2016. ATE has also held 3M Preferred Converter status since 2018. Frequently Asked Questions<\/h2>\n

Does a converter sell the material at a markup over the manufacturer’s price?<\/strong> The material itself is bought by the converter on the same terms as a customer buying direct from the manufacturer. What you pay the converter covers the material and the conversion work, the cutting, the tolerance, the packaging: it isn’t the same thing resold at a different price, it’s a different product, the finished part rather than the raw material.<\/p>\n

Why not cut the material in-house?<\/strong> That works for simple geometries and low volumes. It gets harder as the geometry gets more complex or the tolerance tightens, or when the part needs to be qualified for series production under a specific quality framework: that calls for dedicated tooling and cutting expertise.<\/p>\n

What does it mean for a converter to be approved by a material manufacturer?<\/strong> A status the manufacturer itself grants to certain converters.
